--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liliana liked our second extended visit to Africa more than Emil. It began on October 26th, 2013, with the arrival of our car in Praia
on Cape Verde and ended recently with the departure of  the ferry on January 8th, 2016, in Suakin in Sudan. Although we drove now
on the 'Dark Continent' another 19'330 miles [31'109km] through 15 different countries, it wasn't anymore so positive like the first
trip from January 14th, 1989, to November 2nd, 1992, (60'638 miles [97'587km] from Tanger/Morocco to Capetown/South Africa).
In between we visited from July 1st, 2011, to June 1st, 2012, additionally three islands in the Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Madagascar,
Réunion), which belong geographically also to Africa (= 5'299 miles [8'528km]). Why now this disappointment? 1st: We mentioned
in the News August/September 2015 in the first and the second to last passages a few reasons; 2nd: So-called "follow-up visits",
which we try actually to avoid, add also to a growing frustration according to the motto "in previous times it was actually much nicer
and more beautiful!"; 3rd: Yes, and the main cause of disillusions might be found in the politics, from which we try to distance ourselves
but still get affected again and again. Hence we leave now the African continent after totally 6½ years and 85'267 miles (137'224km)
definitely.

Things never turn out the way you expect! Thus we assumed in the News December 2015 that we shall enter the UAE on
January 17th, 2016. However it was nearly one week earlier, because the ferry sailing from the Sudanese town of Suakin to Jeddah
on the Saudi Arabian side not only changed its schedule but also the vessel. It ran just on Monday and Friday with the smaller ship
"Jamaa II", which had the handicap of not being able to book a cabin in advance. Though having luck and being able to board the
vessel at an early stage, there's a chance to get one if you're a bit "generous", otherwise it's probably the best to look for a convenient
spot on the floor.

What remains the same is the fact that nobody is allowed to drive into or from the vessel both is done by stevedores. Also the
obviously prevailing departure delay of about six hours continues on the African seashore. However the actual sailing time of 14 hours
was "on schedule" so that we docked at about noon in Asia, where the car's delivery took until night time 8pm! The vehicles got
probably scanned in the meantime. The customs examination proceeded more or less smoothly and rather perfunctory; the short term
(10 days) compulsory third party insurance seemed to be more important. It could be bought in situ (N21.47111 E39.17278) for
90 Saudi Riyals (= US$26). There is an ATM of the NCB-Bank 'Al Ahli' about ½ a mile [800m] south of the seaport terminal -
N21.46528 E39.17389. Furthermore port taxes of SAR170 (= US$49) have to be paid. The advantage of the otherwise pretty
remote harbor terminal is that it's possible and allowed to sleep in the car on the nearly empty parking lot.

Hence we started the following Sunday morning the approximately 932 miles [1'500km] of transit to the border of the United Arab
Emirates. The easiest way is to drive from the parking lot firstly to the left (north) for about 700 yards [700m] to the first roundabout.
There you turn twice to the right to join the 'Al Fahla' highway. Nothing can go wrong afterwards until the UAE customs is reached.
After about 10½ miles [17km] there is a big truckstop and supermarket on the right side. Another hint: The transit time in Saudi
Arabia is 72 hours, counting when leaving the customs; an overstay of the visa might cost a fine of US$750 per day per person!

The road is in an excellent shape and fast and offers some good possibilities to camp and spend the night in the car, particularly at the
Sasco-Palm Truckstops, which lie a bit further away from the highway than others. Here are four GPS coordinates that we have taken
over unverified from others: N22.33722 E41.54387; N22.70442 E42.14477; N23.41670 E44.03545; N24.18014 E48.90088.
We needed for the 900 miles [1'450km], measured by our odometer via Riyadh-Al Kharj, a driving time of 20 hours, i.e. an average
speed of 45 mph.

After having crossed the Saudi Arabia-UAE border we intended to do a so-called "follow-up visit" to the Liwa Oases that we visited
already back in January 2013. By then, we have been very delighted. Unfortunately the excitement was rather kept within limits:
Firstly the weather situation was completely different (chilly, humid even with fog), secondly quite a few structural changes have
been made during the last three years that did hardly improve the overall impression, and thirdly we both caught a tough flu. Thus we
finished our planned "follow-up excursion" to Al Ain und Oman already on January 15th, and continued directly to Ajman, where we
have taken "refuge" at favorable conditions in the Apartment Hotel Habib. Here we were and still are able to recover, cook and as a
first priority catch-up with our since Namibia neglected African websites: Examining and selecting 7'700 pictures from South Africa,
Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan and Saudi Arabia, as
well as writing afterwards its captures. Enough of work until it gets warmer!

Sudan: Campingsite at Meroë along the way from Khartoum to the Red Sea

And when once it becomes warmer? Then we are driving eastwards for the second time with the ferry to Bandar Abbas in Iran, for
the second time through Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to the next new country of
Tajikistan, our 186th destination. Inshallah!
