Hot News - February 2006   (February 1st, 2006)

Website statistics: In January we were able to welcome on our website about (the counter was partly
failing) 32'928 visitors (= record) from 108 different countries who did 555'152 hits
                                (= record). (December 2005 = 30'241 visitors - 108 countries - 484'103 hits)

On January 24th, we entered again a new country, this time the 153rd - Laos. It was a completely painless,
fast and uncomplicated border at Cau Treo/Nam Phao. The only unpleasantness was the thick fog and
the bitterly cold on the pass, which made it easier to say good-bye to the mostly overcast and rainy Vietnam.
On the Laotian side, the sun welcomed us already after a few miles and is shining ever since.

Coming from Vietnam it is evident that the density of population is much smaller in Laos - statistically 10 times
less per square mile. Having visited already India and Nepal, Laos remembers us very much to the latter one,
while Vietnam shows a big similarity in many respect with India.

Before leaving Vietnam we had the "pleasure" to experience the feedback of the press conference in front of
the Opera in Hanoi, organized by the Swiss Embassy. So far we found 15 newspapers, which felt that our
presence is "important" enough to write about it extensively (corresponding links are listed on our media page).
In Laos, however, we try to travel again anonymously.

Due to Liliana's leg fracture on December 25th in Cambodia, we are still "confined" to hotels and
guesthouses. The new x-ray on January 17th in Hanoi unfortunately showed a still pretty clearly
visible crack. Thus a new check will make sense only in about a week's time again. But we are confident that
this unpleasant cast will be removed at the time of our entry to Myanmar on February 24th. As soon as we
know more about this unique attempt - we haven't received the written permit yet - we shall write an update.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 7th, 2005, we were able to celebrate after a journey through 150 countries the car's
600'000th Kilometer - very prosaic in front of the post office in Cayenne/French Guiana.

(after some loading-time please klick "IN LEGEND" and afterwards "HAIR TO MAGELLAN
- and you will see that we already belong to it too!)
