001  12/24/2018: High above the clouds:
Approach above the Andes to the capital
Santiago with the Chilean Sky Airline to
our second South American journey …..
002  ….. view to the partly still snow
covered mountain massif of the Andes
and the Laguna del Inca along the main
road between Argentina and Chile …..
003  ….. and the well attended green
cultivated fields down in the valley
north of Santiago
004  At the Santiago airport arrival hall
Emil is holding up a nameplate of our
German travel friends Brigitte and Gerhard,
whom we have not seen for 20 years …..
005  ….. finally we are meeting again the
two, who inspired us in August 1983 in
Malawi/Africa to embark on our epic world
journey (meant only for 1-2 years) …..
006  ….. we enjoy some precious hours
together in a cozy little restaurant in
Barrio Lastarria in the city center of
Santiago. When shall we meet again?
007  At the port of San Antonio, 71 miles
[115km] west of Santiago: Cranes are rising
behind nostalgic colorful fishing boats
008  The ship "Ever Lovely" of the
Taiwanese Evergreen Line with our
container on board docked at the port
of San Antonio
009  The lovely lit cranes at the
San Antonio port at sunset
010  The long harbor walkway in
San Antonio with cafes, fish restaurants
and stalls of all kind attracts many
visitors on weekends

of bites and drinks at the San Antonio
coastal walkway "Paseo Bellamar"
012  Display of fresh fish and crustaceans
at a market stall along the San Antonio's
"Paseo Bellamar" coastal walkway

013  At the San Antonio coastal walkway:
Where there is fish, seagulls (Laridae) are
not far away …..
014  ….. also snoozing Patagonian
sea lions (Otaria flavescens)
seem to be fine here …..
015  ….. even Perluvian pelicans
(Pelecanus thagus) are present
and on the lookout for food
016  12/28/2018: Emil drives our Land-
Cruiser after its >7 weeks Pacific sea
journey (=14'900mi [24'000km]) from
Bintulu/Sarawak/Malaysia out of its 31st
container in the terminal of Puerto Colum-
bo, 3½mi [6km] southeast of San Antonio
017  Emil explains our country ribbon to
the customs boss who is dispatching us
personally. Fascinated by our adventure,
there is no inspection at all. Merely VIN
and engine numbers and registration
papers are checked
018  A happy Emil is driving our
LandCruiser out of the container terminal
of Puerto Columbo. We managed the
paper work on our own within two days
and paid around US$942 on port fees
(freight US$1'800)

019  Coast along the deep blue Pacific
Ocean at Canatalao 3 miles [5km] south
of El Quisco in Central Chile between
San Antonio and Valparaíso
020  A wild growing Yucca-like plant
at the Pacific Coast remembering us
to the South African vegetation
021  The delicate "lily of the Incas"
(Alstroemeria pelegrina): It grows very
close to the shoreline We spot it along the
‘Pablo Neruda Trail” along the Pacific Coast

yellow thistles on the “Pablo Neruda

028  Laja Falls along the Panamericana
between the cities of Los Ángeles and
Chillán – a well known tourist destination
with many commercial campgrounds
029  Did the cat not choose the
loveliest spot for a nap?
030  After our first camping night, Emil
enjoys breakfast on the open meadow of
Camping Antü & Küyen in Chillancito
031  Seagulls settled down on a narrow
sand bank of the quietly flowing Laja River
032  Enchanting evening mood on the
Laja River where at sunset the red rays of
the sky are reflecting in the calm water
033  A family is enjoying her peaceful
sunbath on a small sandbank of the

on the dried out meadow is giving brilliance
to the surrounding
035  A wonderful, delicate combination
of colors of wildflowers
036  Wild flowering hortensias
(Hydrangea serratifolia) in full bloom
on the shore of the Laja river

nature with Río Laja in the Laguna del
Laja National Park
039  One of the many gushing waterfalls
carving its way through pristine nature
040  Crater landscape at Laguna del
Laja National Park: On the lava slopes
along Río Laja protected mountain cedars
(Austrocedrus chilensis) are growing
041  Our LandCruiser at the Laguna del
Laja, once more with open hood to cool
off its permanent overheating problem
042  The lava fields around the Laguna
del Laja form an eerie lunar landscape.
45 people lost their lives in this region on
May 18th, 2005, due to a blizzard
043  Our LandCruiser is winding its way
through a bizarrely formed lava landscape
of the Laguna del Laja National Park
044  Between the rocks of lava, nature
is reawakening in new splendor: A bush
of yellow daisies
045  Liliana is on a discovery tour between
the volcanic rocks and is again and again
mesmerized about the wonders of nature
046  Colorful mountain huts at the foot
of the still active Antuco volcano
047  Liliana is enjoying the quietness of the
clean Los Abedulos Camping 7mi [11km]

15½mi [25km] before the Conguillío
National Park entrance
048  The 10'153 ft. [3’125m] high
Llaima volcano is towering from the
Conguillío National Park and is visible
already from far
049  Our trio poses for a picture with the
background of the Llaima volcano in the
1950 opened Conguillío National Park
050  The scenery of the 8'379 ft. [2'554m]
high Sierra Nevada volcano northeast of
Llaima, is another mountain range in
Conguillío National Park with an
attractive view …..
051  ….. another is the Laguna Quilillo
or Verde – one of the alpine lakes,
which is part of the total 235sq mi
[608km²] big Conguillío-National Park
052  The Llaima Volcano is shining in
immaculate white between stately araucaria
trees (Araucaria araucana). It has
experienced 35 eruptions since 1640
053  Our LandCruiser is looping
through the most attractive part of
the Conguillío National Park
054  Liliana is enjoying the scenic beauty
of the Conguillío National Park, in the
background Llaima volcano
055  Conguillío Lake, framed by forest
and the 8'379 ft. [2'554m] high
Sierra Nevada mountain range

9'380ft. [2'860m] high Villarrica volcano
while having lunch (last eruption 3/3/2015)
063  View from the city of Villarica across
the lake to the eponymous Villarrica
volcano. It is one of Chile’s active volcanos
064  Lake Calafquén, one of the "Seven
Lakes" on the way from Pucón, Villarica
and Panguipulli to Los Lagos on the
highway #5 - the Panamericana
065  The wooden twin-towered church
San Sebastián in Panguipulli, built in 1947
by Capuchin monks, is the jewel of the
city with 35'000 people
066  Lunch break at the stony shore
of Río Quinchilca near Punaco
067  Emil early morning at our breakfast
table at the “Turismo Tell Camping
Los Suizos” in Los Lagos, above the
river Río Quinchilca ….
068  ….. where we are invited by
Hans, the Swiss owner, to a glass of wine
and thereby learn new things about Chile
069  A feeling of home in the quaintly
furnished “Turismo Tell Camping Los
Suizos” in Punaco, 5½mi [9km] east of
Los Lagos and equidistant south of Punaco

070  Fuchsias (Fuchsia) adorn the well-
kept garden of the “Turismo Tell Camping

tinctoria) in the garden of the “Turismo
Tell Camping Los Suizos” in Los Lagos
073  An attractive bend of the
Río Quinchilca winding through a
rural scenery in Los Lagos
074  Chile is rich on impressive sceneries:
The perfectly shaped, 8'701ft. [2'652m]
high volcano Osorno raising off a green
plain is one of them
075  Flowers belong to Liliana’s favorite
photo motifs – here a beautiful combination
of plants: Pampas grass (Cortaderia
selloana), giant rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria)
and torch lilies (Kniphofia uvaria)
