News August 2013       (Tiraspol/Transnistria, August 25th, 2013)

Website statistics:   Unfortunately 'Webalizer' has been shut down definitively in February. 'Logaholic' is the current counter.
'Logaholic' shows now the following figures in July: 17'804 visits / 77'584 pages
'Google-Analytics' showed 23'582 pageviews during July. The visitors come from ~221 countries!
                   ('Logaholic' June 16'317 visits / 69'733 pages; May 18'165 visits / 69'139 pages)
                        ('Google-Analytics': June = 22'641 pageviews / May = 29'672 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the first time since January 28th, 1999, we set again foot on European soil in Odessa in the Ukraine at the Black Sea; that's almost 175
months resp. exactly 5'316 days. Back then we left our "home continent" on the ferry from Gelibolu in Turkey over the Dardanelles to Lapseki
on the Asian side and since toured 52 new and 15 already known countries. We arrived from Poti in Georgia in Asia on August 18th, 2013.
While the "Dardanelles-jump" lasted only ½ hour, we were able to enjoy the "Black Sea crossing" for about 60 hours on the world's biggest rail
ferry "Vilnius-Seaways" of the "Ukr-Ferry", which – as we – is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records". A very calm sea, good food,
new refurbished cabins, and moreover reasonable fares (US$ 620 for two persons and our LandCruiser, including port fees, full board and
transport during four full days). But because the vessel is above all a ferry for trucks and rail cars that only besides takes along also ordinary cars
and its passengers in cabins, there is no entertainment on board except some videos, which – after the preceding turbulent days – was just alright
with us.

The excitement happened in Abkhazia, which is claimed by Georgia but "used" by the Russians. It became our 177th country and where the
odometer turned to 700'000th kilometer (~ 435'000 miles). Currently – during the peak season in the months of July and August – it is downright
flooded by Russian summer visitors. Abkhazia offers appropriate beaches, even if they are virtually "equipped" just with pebbles and shingles.
Thanks to the more than 16'000 ft. high Caucasus mountain range, Abkhazia offers a variety of landscapes, like e.g. very green valleys, rugged
gorges and romantic lakes, which – due to the (still) missing infrastructure ((4wd conditions) – are reachable difficultly and only with a lot of
efforts. The Abkhazians, who mainly speak only Abkhazian and Russian, are exceptionally friendly and helpful people – probably also due to
their isolation (they are not recognized by the international community, with a few exceptions). Possibly the recent turmoil of war (1992/93
Georgia-Russia) plays a role too. This extreme hospitality conveyed probably a (false) sense of security that took its toll on August 11th:
Thoughtlessly we didn't close the co-driver's window while talking to an oncoming driver for about one minute. That was when our two Panasonic
cameras have been stolen. Although they haven't been the latest versions anymore, they satisfied still fully our requirements. What was hurting us
the most was the loss of about 2/3 of our photos from Abkhazia, including the picture we made of the odometer showing the kilometer 700'000.0.
Two days later back in Georgia, we found a temporary Nikon-Coolpix camera, so that we were able to shoot the delayed "700'000" at
700"433.9 km. Abkhazia can currently be visited either from Georgia or from Russia without any problem – with or without an own vehicle.
Unfortunately transit is not possible – everybody returns where he came from. Here some specifications of the rather unknown Abkhazia:
Size 3'343 sq.mi., population 250'000, capital Sukhumi (in Abkhazian ?k??) with 40'000 people, currency RUB (Russian Ruble),
Visa (Letter of Clearance) from the internet.

Since our last News - July 2013 we visited not only Abkhazia but explored also Georgia along the Caucasus mountain range. Hence we drove in
rather wet weather conditions the "Georgian Military Highway" in direction Kazbegi, which is now open to everyone with an appropriate Russian
visa. It is a wonderful mountain pass that is unfortunately under construction for about 25 miles before Kazbegi, presumably still for a long time;
it's very tedious particularly if the goal isn't Russia but back to Tbilisi. Our highlight in Georgia was the "Swaneti region", which stretches firstly
along the Abkhazian and later the Russian border. On the skiing area (in winter) of Zuruldi, reachable by a chairlift from Mestia, an impressive
360° panorama of high mountain regions can be enjoyed. While we mentioned the awakening of the spring in our "News" May/June 2013 and
July 2013, in the Swaneti valley we spotted already the first forerunner of fall: Leafs changing their colors and falling off.

Abkhazia: 'Substitute picture 700'436.4' instead of the 700'000th kilometer on the odometer, because the camera and the original photo was stolen

What means the approaching fall to us? Besides other three "self-declared" nations like Transnistria, Turkish Cyprus and to a certain extent also
Kosovo, we intend to visit also the "recognized" new but still unknown countries of Moldova, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro. Thereby
we have to cross some already visited areas (Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria), i.e. we are heading south in general. The
destination will be influenced pretty much by the uncertainty in the Middle East.

We can only repeat the epilog of the News - July 2013: Regarding photos and coverage, our website has to wait furthermore during the travel
season 2013. Only our whereabouts is mentioned relatively regularly on our starting page – subject to internet availability.
