Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We reached "our" 186th country Tajikistan. Since having visited our last "new" country Sudan 174 days passed during which
we changed from the African to the Asian continent, and drove during 218 hours 5'763 miles [9'274km] through six different states.
The latest "News March/April 2016" dates back to Kerman in Iran, where we waited to get the five-day Turkmenistan transit visa.
It arrived finally after 29 days of worrying. We then started from Mashhad to the Turkmen border and in direction Ashgabat the
"famous-infamous" capital. Famous because of its countless palaces and monuments, infamous because the unbelievable luxury
mystifyingly shouldn't be pictured. We were able to do only some "shots" out of the moving car.

Two days later we continued further northwards, targeting for the next night the Darvaza gas crater. The first 66 miles [100km] of
the roughly 170 miles [270k] long stretch consisted still of more or less drivable blacktop. Afterwards it deteriorated so much that
it wasn't anymore possible to drive faster than 12mph [20km/h], unless one races five to six times faster over it. This simply is no
more possible with our ageing and overweight vehicle without the risk of substantial damage. Thus it has taken us full 7 hours, while
the Turkmen cover the distance with their newest LandCruisers and Lexus' in half the time. But to see the display of nature is
always worthwhile the efforts, particularly at dusk and in the night. The crater might be named rightly as "Door to Hell". Since 1971
(probably already since the 60s), the sinkhole, which measures 225 ft. [69m] in diameter and a depth of 100 ft. [30m] burns
continuously natural gas. It's not clear whether Soviet engineers inflamed it purposely to burn it off (or probably also accidentally).
It's neither clear whether the flames can be extinguished in the future, nor whether it shall remain a tourist attraction in Turkmenistan
a lot of things are unclear in this pretty isolated country. The only fact that was clear to us was the terrible condition of the road's
continuation to Uzbekistan. Another 9 hours on 185 miles [300km] of deeply potholed Soviet tarmac; nothing seems to have been
maintained since that area. Just the latest 25 to 30 miles [40-50km] before Dashoguz, one of the two northerly border crossings to
Uzbekistan, have been in an acceptable shape.

And that's there where our second "border show" started. Already back when entering Turkmenistan, we should have emptied
partly our Toyota; but while exiting the country, we were told to move everything out of the car and put it on the floor. Before our
cameras have been checked for forbidden or inadmissible pictures; also SD cards and flashdrives, even laptops are doubtful; books
that are detected get verified. It's clear that customs has the right to do this if there is any suspicion, but here it was either pure
harassment or they hoped to get bribes. Thanks to our travel history (Guinness Record) and our persisting stance they relinquished.
But it happened not only in Turkmenistan Uzbekistan was no better! On the contrary, entering they purposely didn't hand over
some car documents, which are wanted by the exit customs. If you cannot show them, this is an "offence" that has to be punished.
Yes, other countries other cultures! But it's a pity that some "highwaymen" leave behind a bad aftertaste of otherwise very friendly
people and an extremely interesting country..

While Iran actually sticks out with mosques (Imam Mosque in Esfahan and Reza Mosque in Mashhad) and Turkmenistan with its
magnificent buildings (follies), Uzbekistan offers more of historical sites from the former Silk Road, like Khiva, Bukhara and
Samarkand. Tajikistan will likely score with its scenic mountain attractions in Khujand we already got a glance of some snowy
scenery from the distance.

Tajikistan/Khujand: Small LandCruiser besides huge Lenin

Not to get bored, some other problems are currently popping over the horizon: Because the mountain ranges of Tajikistan's South
are getting taller and taller, not only more precipitations occur (which cause in return many landslides and flooding), but there is still
snow in many places. Said that, the access to the Pamir Mountains, which is actually the main attraction of Tajikistan, suffered
several blocked roads and a washed away bridge two weeks ago. Unfortunately rain is still falling, but the drier period is supposed
to start in June. Because this region (GBAO - Autonomous Region of Gorno-Badakhshan) lies "sensitively" close to Afghanistan
for hundreds of miles separated only by the Panj river we have to apply in the capital of Dushanbe for an access permit. It's not
only due to a possible Taliban presence, but also due to the potential drug problem, the heroin flow from Afghanistan to Russia and
Europe.
