News December 2016              (Yangon/Myanmar, 12/31/2016)

check now and then also our information site → "what's happening?"

Website statistics:   'Webalizer' has been shut down in February 2013. 'Logaholic' became 2016 too unreliable.
Thus 'Google-Analytics' remains as the only counter.
'Google-Analytics' showed 21'128 pageviews during December 2016. The visitors came from 235 countries!
                        ('Google-Analytics': November = 23'612 pageviews / October = 22'729 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all we wish to all of you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017! wherever our visitors come from.

Second of all expect the unexpected (see latest "News – Oct./Nov. 2016"): Thus we stuffed on December 1st, 2016, our LandCruiser in
its 29th container, which left four days later the port of Odessa/Ukraine as scheduled. Due to a change in the timetable of the Evergreen
Shipping line, it arrived even a bit earlier on December 13th, at Piraeus in Greece. However there seemed to be chaos, as the Greek
dockers struck the containers piled up. Admittedly our car was discharged but not transshipped. The same day we read on the tracking
website, we were already in Thailand that it would leave Piraeus only on January 11th, 2017, for Malaysia. Immediate inquiries
showed that the arrival at Bintulu in Sarawak would be actually one month later. Hence what do we do during this month without a car?
We didn't want to spend too much money, because the coming weeks will be anyway pretty costly; apart from this the flight from
Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur was unchangeably booked, like the apartment there as well as the doctor and the dentists. Firstly we thought
of a charter flight from Kuala Lumpur to Christmas and Cocos Islands, but the Australian hotels in the Indian Ocean are exorbitant pricey.
Suddenly we see on TV a program about Myanmar, formerly Burma, which we visited in 1975 for a short time. It remained the only
country, where we failed to get ever a car's entry permit, though we worked hard on it since 1998. Recently, i.e. since its political opening
about five-six years ago, the regulations have been eased. Today it's possible to visit many places, even cross the country, if a (paid) guide
is escorting the vehicle from entry to exit (analog China, Bhutan, and starting from March 2017 also apparently Thailand). No sooner said
than done! As the results from our doctor was fine and the dentists finished their work, we applied for the e-visa, which we received
within a few hours, booked the flights, bought a guide book and flew on December 26th, with AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon, the
former capital called then Rangoon.

While we spent the last New Year in Khartoum in Sudan (the next-to-last in Windhoek/Namibia and the antepenultimate in Praia on
Cape Verde), we are studying currently which sights we could visit here. Of course, we already paid a visit to the world famous and well
worth seeing Shwedagon Pagoda. Unfortunately, organizing of an individual trip isn't that simple. Renting a car and starting a tour in
another country is a feasible task, even not knowing to talk the language and read the script. But this doesn't work here in Myanmar,
because foreigners are not allowed to self-drive a car without a permit (even if such a permit might be got, a Myanmarese would have to
ride along). To be driven isn't a budget deal without having connections: US$ 150 per day is quickly asked for; long distance busses are
nowadays modern and comfortable, but they run mostly only at night (however tourists want to see the country at daylight); the "old and
wobbly" railway might be interesting now and then, but is said to show many drawbacks. What remains is organized tours, and those we
don't like at all as firm individualists apart from the significant fares (1st-world-tourism discovered Myanmar it has increased sixfold
since the end of the boycott).

Ukraine/Odessa: Loading of LandCruiser to Bintulu/Malaysia

Somehow we shall put together a program in Myanmar to be able to explore some of the tourist attractions of the former Burma. We
shall revert in due course on our site "what's happening", as the mobile net has taken over nearly all over here too. Next will be a bus
journey on January 2nd, 2017, to the "Golden Rock" of Kyaiktiyo. But there is still the New Year's change, fulfilling hopefully all the
hopes and wishes of everybody!
